"I defuse bombs for a living."
Just when I thought I had heard every opening line for a conversation, I met Graham. That was a phrase I simply had to know more about.
Graham had a unique look. His ponytail stretched halfway down his back, and tattoos covered his arms from top to bottom.
As he went on to explain, Graham had served in military units all around the world specializing in defusing bombs to protect our troops. While in the military, he was as far from living a Christian life as he could be. Within the past 3 years, he met a woman who led him to Christ. For almost 22 months out of that time, he was deployed overseas with the military. They dated via phone and were married a few months back. My respect for this man skyrocketed.
When he spent time in Israel about 10 years ago, a Christian man was his assigned buddy that he worked with each day. "Rather than preaching to me, the man would tell me stories about the Biblical significance of each site we would come upon. I did not know it at the time, but that man was planting seeds for my Christian growth," Graham said with an exuberant look on his face.
After talking with Graham for 20 minutes, I realized that this was a man who had a new-found hope in his life. Now he is retired and fills his days serving others by shoveling driveways, sponsoring Boy Scout camping trips, and any other way he can find.
This man inspired me. It took years for him to accept Christ, but now he is living out the Christian faith daily.
You never know how a conversation you have today can change the life of someone else. Maybe you are simply the person to plant the seed that others will cultivate later.
